The oil pump drive gear must be replaced when the teeth are worn out, and when the splines that connect the gear to the oil pump shaft are damaged or worn out
If the splines are worn out due to the gear turning, the oil pressure in the engine lubrication system may drop.
In this case, the oil pressure may drop to zero.
On the VAZ-21214 engine, to access the cylinder block socket through which the oil pump drive gear is dismantled, it is necessary to remove the ignition module bracket.
To do this, use a 13 mm wrench to loosen the two nuts securing the lower bracket to the cylinder block (for clarity, the operation is shown on a removed engine).
Using a 13 mm head, unscrew the nut securing the "mass" injection system wires to the cylinder block stud (in the front upper part of the block on the left side).
Remove the wire terminal from the stud
Using a 13 mm head, unscrew the nut of the upper fastening of the ignition module bracket to the cylinder block.
Remove the bracket of the oil supply tube holder to the hydraulic tensioner of the camshaft drive chain shaft.
Lift the bracket with the ignition module and move it away from the cylinder block.
Use a screwdriver to pry up the oil pump drive gear retainer and remove it from the cylinder block socket.
The connection is sealed with rubber and paronite gaskets.
We insert a wooden conical mandrel with tension into the spline hole of the oil pump drive gear and remove the gear from the cylinder block, turning it counterclockwise.
Be careful not to drop the gear into the cylinder block.
We install the oil pump drive gear in the reverse order.
We engage the gear with the gear of the oil pump drive shaft and, holding the gear with a screwdriver, remove the wooden mandrel

We remove the oil pump drive gear from the cylinder block.
On the VAZ-21213 engine, we remove the fuel pump with a heat-insulating spacer and a pusher.
We remove the oil pump drive sprocket (see Removing the camshaft drive chain and sprockets).
Using a 10 mm socket, loosen the two bolts securing the thrust flange of the shaft to the cylinder block
Remove the thrust flange.
