The propeller shaft is usually removed for repairs or to remove the transfer case or axles
Typical faults of propeller shafts:
- knocking in the propeller shaft when starting off, during sudden acceleration or gear shifting
Usually occurs when the nuts of the bolts securing the elastic coupling and the flanges of the propeller shafts are loose.
Also due to increased circumferential clearance in the splined connection of the front or rear propeller shafts;
- noise and vibration of the propeller shaft
Occurs as a result of deformation of the front or rear propeller shafts, imbalance of the propeller shafts.
Wear of the universal joints.
- leak lubrication
It occurs due to weakening of the seal collar of the splined joint of the front, rear or intermediate cardan shafts.
Damage to the protective cover of the CV joint of the intermediate shaft.
Wear of the crosspiece seals.
Removing the cardan shaft
Prepare the car for removing the cardan shaft.
Place the car on an inspection pit or lift.
Leave the neutral position of the gearbox engaged.
Using a 13 mm wrench, unscrew the four nuts securing the rear propeller shaft hinge fork to the rear axle gearbox flange.
To prevent the bolts from turning, insert a screwdriver between the bolt head flat and the fork and hold.
Remove the bolts.
Also disconnect the propeller shaft fork from the rear axle drive shaft flange. transfer case bridge.
Removing the rear cardan shaft
Having disconnected the front shaft joint forks from the flanges of the front axle gearbox and the front axle drive shaft of the transfer case, remove the front propeller shaft
Install the shafts in the reverse order.
Maintenance of the splined joint of the propeller shaft
Lubricate the splined joint of the sliding fork of the cardan shaft, pumping grease with a syringe through a grease nipple until the grease comes out from under the seal.
Using a syringe with a narrow tip, lubricate the bearings of the cardan joints through a grease nipple until the grease comes out from under the all seals
If there is no narrow tip for the syringe, then you will have to remove the cardan shaft and lubricate on the removed cardan.
