Installing the steering gear of the ZIL-5301 vehicle

Install the steering gear with hydraulic booster on the frame using the KZ-0352 device and secure it with bolts

Install the power steering pump on the engine, and the pump reservoir on the bracket mounted on the radiator mounting frame.

Installing the steering gear using a hoist

Connect the high and low pressure hoses and tubes to pump, reservoir and to the steering gear housing and pour at least 2.5 liters of oil into the pump reservoir through a funnel.

Only clean filtered oil should be used for the power steering; oil must be added through a funnel with a double mesh.

When using contaminated oil, the pump and power steering parts wear out quickly.

Adding oil to the power steering reservoir

When adding oil, use a special clamping bar shown in (Fig. 2).

The procedure for adding oil is as follows:

  • - install a new paper filter in the pump reservoir and secure it with a clamping bar bar;
  • - with the steering wheel turned all the way to the left and the longitudinal steering rod disconnected, pour fresh oil into the reservoir;
  • - start the engine and, while it is idling, add oil to the required level;

To remove air from the system, rotate the steering wheel from lock to lock, holding it briefly (no more than 3 s) in the extreme positions with a force of approximately 100 N, and add oil to the required level as needed.

Filling with oil and removing air from the system is considered complete when air stops escaping in the form of bubbles through the oil in the pump reservoir;

  • - stop the engine and remove the clamp bar from the paper filter;
  • - install the reservoir lid with the spring and sealing gasket, aligning the groove on the lid with the protrusion on the tank.

Then install the rubber ring, washer and tighten the cap with a wing nut only by hand.

Connect the longitudinal steering rod.

Steering of the ZIL-5301 vehicle: 1 - power steering pump drive gear; 2 - ball bearing; 3 - bearing housing; 4 - low pressure hose tube; 5 - pump tank mounting bracket; 6, 17 - low pressure hoses; 7 - pump tank; 8 - suction hose; 9 - high-pressure hose pipe; 10 - power steering pump; 11 - steering column mounting bracket; 12 - steering column; 13 - high-pressure hose; 14 - steering wheel; 15, 18 - propeller shaft mounting wedge; 16 - propeller shaft; 19 - steering gear; 20 - steering gear pitman arm; 21, 22 - thrust rings; 23 - gasket; 24 - steering gear mounting bracket; 25, 26 - bolts

If the pump reservoir cover is removed, the engine may only be started after installing the pressure bar to prevent oil from escaping from the reservoir

When servicing the vehicle, special attention should be paid to checking the fastening of the vertical bolt 26 (Fig. 3), screwed vertically into the mechanism housing, the length of which should be 45 mm.

On vehicles manufactured since June 2002 (chassis M60929), a reinforced bracket (product 5301-3430016-41) is installed with an additional bolt 25 for fastening to the frame on the horizontal shelf.

When repairing a vehicle, it is permissible to install a new bracket instead of the old one by additionally drilling a hole in the upper shelf of the left side member.

When installing a new bracket, first install the bracket on the frame and then secure it to it steering gear:

Tightening torque of nuts should be 80-100 Nm.
