The main faults that require removing the gearbox from the vehicle to fix:
- - increased (compared to usual) noise;
- - difficult gear shifting;
- - spontaneous gear disengagement or unclear gear engagement;
- - oil leakage through seals and gaskets. In addition, the gearbox must be removed to replace the clutch, front bearing of the gearbox input shaft, flywheel and rear oil seal of the engine crankshaft.
The work of removing and installing the gearbox is very labor-intensive, so first make sure that its malfunctions are not caused by other reasons (insufficient oil level, clutch drive defects, loosening of the gearbox and its covers, etc.).
You will need: keys "10", "13", Allen key "12", screwdriver, pliers.
Place the car on an inspection ditch or lift.
Disconnect the "negative" cable from the battery.
Drain the oil from the gearbox.
Remove the front propeller shaft (see - Removing and lubricating the propeller shaft Niva).
Remove the intermediate shaft (see "Replacing and repairing the intermediate shaft Niva Chevrolet").
Disconnect the wires from the reverse light switch.
From inside the cabin, use a screwdriver to pry up the gearshift lever cover.
Unscrew the handle from the lever and remove it along with the cover.
Unscrew the nut securing the support plate of the gearshift mechanism.
Remove the rear support of the power unit.
Unscrew the nut of the tightening bolt of the clamp of the gearshift rod gears.
Unscrew the three bolts securing the support plate bracket and remove the gearshift mechanism drive.
Unscrew the bolts securing the clutch housing shield
Unscrew the two bolts securing the clutch slave cylinder to the clutch housing and remove the cylinder without disconnecting it from the hose (the cylinder remains hanging on the hose).
Using a 13 mm head, unscrew the top bolt securing the starter
From underneath the car, using a 13 mm head with an extension, unscrew the two bolts securing the starter
The middle bolt also secures the bracket for oxygen concentration sensor control wire holder

Remove the exhaust pipe.
Unscrew the four bolts securing the clutch housing to the engine.
The assistant should hold the rear of the gearbox.
Remove the gearbox assembly with the clutch housing.
Do not rest the end of the input shaft on clutch pressure spring petals to avoid deforming them.
Install the gearbox in the reverse order of removal.
Fill the gearbox with oil.
Before installing the gearbox, apply a thin layer of LSC-15 or Litol-24 grease to the splined portion of the input shaft.
Check and adjust the gearshift control drive if necessary.
