The brake pads must be replaced as a set

Prepare the car for the work.

Raise the car on a lift or hang the rear of the car on an inspection pit.

If the work is carried out on an inspection pit, then you need to put stops under the front wheels.

And if we hang the rear part, you need to put a safety stand.

Remove the brake drum, for this:

Using a thin screwdriver through the threaded hole in the drum, turn the ratchet nut to bring the pads together.

The left wheel has a ratchet nut with a left-hand thread.

The right wheel has a ratchet nut with a right-hand thread. You need to take this into account when bringing the pads together.

After bringing the pads together, use a slotted screwdriver to pry up and remove the hub bearing cover (Figure 2).

Remove the drum.

Inspect the brake drum. The inner diameter of the new drum is 228.5 mm.

The maximum allowable inner diameter of the brake drum is 229.5 mm.

If the inner diameter is greater than the maximum allowable, the brake drum must be replaced.

Brake drums must be replaced as a set.

After removing the brake drum, you must not press the brake pedal, otherwise the pistons may come out of the brake cylinder.

Remove the spacer bar with the tension spring

Assemble the rear wheel brake mechanism in the reverse order.

Rear wheel brake mechanism components: 1 - spacer bar mounting spring; 2 - automatic clearance adjustment mechanism ratchet; 3 - spacer bar with automatic clearance adjustment mechanism; 4 - upper tension spring

Figure 14 shows the position of the rear brake components with automatic clearance adjuster.

Tighten the hub bearing nut to 175 Nm.

Replace the pads on the other side of the car in the same way.

Adjust the position of the brake pads as follows:

  • - press the brake pedal several times (press the brake pedal only with the brake drum installed);
  • - press and hold the brake pedal in the pressed position;
  • - raise and lower the parking brake lever with the button on the parking brake lever pressed so that the ratchet mechanism does not work.

Clicks from the automatic adjustment mechanism will be heard in the rear wheel brake mechanisms. An assistant should listen for these clicks.

Raise and lower the parking brake lever until the clicks stop. After that, we check the braking efficiency.

You can adjust it without an assistant, considering that the outer diameter of the pads should be 227.5±0.1 mm.
