Unscrew the steering knuckle mounting nut and remove it using puller mod. 2496 or mod. И803.40.000 (Fig. 1) pitman arm.

Knocking the pitman arm together can cause parts to break.

Removing the steering pitman arm using a puller

Unscrew the crankcase plug with a magnet and drain the oil by turning the steering wheel 2 - 3 times from one extreme position to the other.

To drain the oil from the system more completely, disconnect all hoses and tubes and drain the oil remaining in the reservoir and power steering pump.

Steering of the ZIL-5301 vehicle: 1 - power steering pump drive gear; 2 - ball bearing; 3 - bearing housing; 4 - low-pressure hose tube; 5 - pump reservoir mounting bracket; 6, 17 - low-pressure hoses; 7 - pump reservoir; 8 - suction hose; 9 - high-pressure hose tube; 10 - power steering pump; 11 - steering column mounting bracket; 12 - steering column; 13 - high pressure hose; 14 - steering wheel; 15, 18 - propeller shaft mounting wedge; 16 - propeller shaft; 19 - steering gear; 20 - steering gear pitman arm; 21, 22 - thrust rings; 23 - gasket; 24 - steering gear mounting bracket; 25, 26 - bolts

Disconnect the propeller shaft by removing the cotter pin, unscrewing the wedge nut 15 (see Fig. 2) and knocking out the wedge using a mandrel made of soft metal or using a puller mod. And 806.03.500 (Fig. 3).

Pressing out the wedge using a puller

Remove the steering cardan shaft.

Removing the steering gear using a lifting hoist

Unscrew the bolts securing the steering gear housing to the bracket and remove it as an assembly using the K3-0352 tool (Fig. 4).

Turn the steering gear with the nipples down and drain the remaining oil from the valve housing, while turning the steering screw from one extreme position to the other.
