How to remove the front axle gearbox of a VAZ-2121 car

The front axle gearbox of the Niva VAZ-2121 car is removed for repair work, when it is necessary to correct the faults that we discussed in the article - "Features of the front axle of the VAZ-2121"

The work must be performed on a lift or inspection pit.

Prepare the car for work.

Drain the oil from the front axle housing (see the article - "Changing the front axle oil").

Dismantle the propeller shaft (see the article - "Removing propeller shafts")

Remove the right drive (article - "Removing and installing front wheel drives")

Disconnect the left lower ball joint from the lever for this:

• - hang and remove left front wheel;
• - unscrew the adjusting nut of the front hub bearings;

Using a 22 mm open-end wrench, unscrew the nut securing the ball joint to the steering knuckle

We install a stop under the lower arm and with a 13 key unscrew the 3 nuts of the bolts securing the ball joint to the lower arm, holding the bolts with a second key

Remove the bolts

Move the steering knuckle with the ball joint away from the lower arm

Remove the left front suspension brace for this:

Using a 22 key, unscrew the outer nut of the rear mount to the body bracket

Remove the washer

Using a 19 key, unscrew the bolt of the front tie rod mount to the crossmember

Move the front end of the tie rod away from the crossbar bracket and remove the brace

After this, we proceed directly to removing the gearbox for this:

Using a 13 key, unscrew the three nuts securing the bearing cover of the left drive inner joint housing to the front axle gearbox

We pry the bearing cover with a mounting blade and, pulling the steering knuckle with the drive to the left, we remove the splined part of the housing of the inner joint of the drive from the hole in the gearbox housing

We move the housing of the inner hinge of the drive back.

We put a stop under gearbox.

Using a 19 key, unscrew the two nuts securing the gearbox to the cylinder block bracket and to the left engine mount bracket

Remove the stop from under the gearbox and remove it

Install the gearbox in the reverse order
