The wheel drive consists of two constant velocity joints (CV joints) connected to each other by a shaft. The shafts are not interchangeable.

The left one is made of a steel rod and is shorter than the right one, which is made of a pipe.

The shaft is connected to the joints by splines; the shaft is fixed in the joints from longitudinal movement by thrust and locking rings.

The splined tailpiece of the outer joint housing is connected to the hub and secured with a bearing nut, and the inner one is connected to the drive gear in the differential box and secured with a locking ring.

Front wheel drive: 1 - locking inner joint housing ring; 2 - inner joint housing; 3 - inner joint housing protective ring; 4 - shaft stop; 5 - retaining ring; 6 - collar; 7 - ball; 8 - thrust ring; 9 - separator; 10 - large clamp; 11 - inner joint retainer; 12 - protective cover; 13 - small clamp; 14 - valve ring; 15 - valve casing; 16 - shaft; 17 - outer joint housing protective ring; 18 - outer joint housing

The joint consists of a housing, a separator, a cage and six balls, which are placed in the grooves of the housing and the cage.

In the outer joint, these grooves are made along the radius, which provides an angle of rotation of up to 42 °.

In the housing of the inner joint, the grooves are straight, which allows the parts to move in the longitudinal direction, lengthening or shortening the drive (this is necessary to compensate for the mutual movements of the suspension and the power unit).

The joint parts are manufactured with high precision.

The balls in each joint are installed in one sorting group.

A worn joint is replaced only as an assembly.

Before assembly, 40 g of grease is placed in the outer joint, and 80 g in the inner joint SHRUS-4.

The tightness of the joint is an essential condition for its reliable operation - it is ensured by protective rubber covers.

The joint cover is put on the joint body and the drive shaft and secured with clamps.

Only special clamps with a smooth inner surface and without protruding parts are allowed to be used.

The covers are attached to the drive shaft through rubber-metal valves. The valve prevents the pressure inside the boot from increasing or decreasing, which can cause it to rupture and the joint to become depressurized.

Possible malfunctions, their causes and methods of elimination

Cause of malfunction - method of elimination

Noise, knocking from the front wheel

Wear of the hinge parts - replace the worn parts

Deformation of the wheel drive shafts - replace the shafts

Grease leakage

Damage to the hinge boots - replace the boots and replace the grease
