Remove the steering mechanism for repair or replacement

We disconnect the tie rod ends from the arms of the front suspension struts (see the article “Replacing the tie rod ends of the Lada Granta”).

To avoid damage to the slip ring on vehicles with an airbag in the steering column, secure the steering shaft from rotation.

We disconnect the intermediate shaft of the steering column from the steering gear shaft (see the article, “Removing and installing the Lada Granta steering column”).

Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the top nut and the two lower fastenings of the steering gear casing.

Unscrew the two lower fastenings of the steering gear casing.

Remove the casing

Unscrew the four nuts and remove the two brackets securing the steering mechanism to the partition of the engine compartment

Move the steering mechanism forward slightly and remove the drive gear shaft from the hole in the engine compartment bulkhead.

Turning the steering mechanism with the shaft up, remove it from the engine compartment through the opening in the left mudguard

Install the steering mechanism in reverse order.

Before installation, check that the rail is installed in the middle position.

To do this, use pliers to rotate the flat on the shaft, the shaft in any direction until it stops, then turn the shaft in the opposite direction two turns and turn the shaft so that the flat on the shaft is located vertically on the right side along the direction of the car.
