For this work you will need plastic clamps for securing the cover

Withdrawal

Disconnect the intermediate shaft of the steering column from the steering mechanism (see “Removing the electric power steering column of a Lada Kalina car”).

To avoid damage to the slip ring on vehicles with an airbag in the steering column, secure the steering shaft from rotation.

We disconnect the steering rods from the steering mechanism (see “Replacing steering rods and ends of a Lada Kalina car”).

How to replace the steering gear cover

Using a 13 mm socket wrench with a ratchet, unscrew the two nuts of the right-hand steering gear mounting bracket and remove the bracket.

How to replace the steering gear cover

Remove the left steering gear mounting bracket in the same way.

How to replace the steering gear cover

Use side cutters or a knife to cut the clamp

Remove the protective cap from the steering mechanism

How to replace the steering gear cover

Remove the right support

How to replace the steering gear cover

Using side cutters, we cut through two plastic clamps securing the protective cover of the steering mechanism on the right 1st and left 2nd sides of the steering mechanism.

How to replace the steering gear cover

Remove the protective cover from the steering gear housing

Installation

  • 1. We put FIOL-1 lubricant into the internal cavity of the steering gear housing.
  • 2. We put a protective cover on the steering mechanism housing. We fix it with new clamps.
  • 3. We put the right support and protective cap on the steering mechanism. We fix the steering gear cap with a new clamp.
  • 4. We fasten it to the steering mechanism with brackets. Tighten the bracket nuts to a torque of 15–18.6 Nm (1.5–1.9 kgf-m)
  • 5. We attach the rod to the steering mechanism.
  • 6. We attach the intermediate shaft of the steering column to the steering gear shaft (see “Removing the steering column with electric power steering of a Lada Kalina car”)

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

In the cabin, unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the lower cardan joint to the steering gear shaft.

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

In the engine compartment, use a 10mm socket to unscrew the nut of the upper fastening of the steering gear casing.

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

Using a 10 mm socket from the bottom of the car, unscrew the two nuts for the lower fastening of the steering gear casing.

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

Remove the steering gear casing.

Hang out the front of the car and remove the front wheels.

The steering mechanism can be removed without tie rods or with tie rods.

In the first case, disconnect the steering rods from the steering mechanism.

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

Using a 13mm socket, unscrew two nuts securing the steering gear brackets to the shield at the front end on both sides.

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

Move the steering mechanism forward of the car to remove the gear shaft from the hole in the front panel.

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

Remove the steering mechanism, bringing it out through the window in the left wheel arch.

When dismantling the steering mechanism assembly with rods, disconnect the tie rod ends from the rotary arms of the shock absorber struts

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

Remove the steering mechanism with rods

Install the steering mechanism in reverse order.

Before installation, check that the rail is installed in the middle position.

To do this, use sliding pliers to rotate the flat on the gear shaft, the shaft in any direction until it stops, then turn the shaft in the opposite direction two full turns and turn the shaft so that the flat on the shaft is located vertically on the right side along the direction of the car .
