Possible faults of the ZIL-5301 steering
Cause of fault (Remedy)
The car does not hold the road well:
- High friction losses in the joints of the steering rods and kingpins
Lubricate the kingpins and joints of the steering rods
- Incorrect installation of the front wheels
Adjust and check the toe-in and installation angles of the front wheels
- Great imbalance of the front wheels
Balance the wheels
- Loose tightening of the nut of the thrust bearings of the steering gear screw
Adjust the tightening of the nut
- Increased free play of the steering wheels
Identify the location of increased free play and adjust or replace worn parts
Increased free play of the steering wheel:
- Wear of the steering rod joints or ball pins
Replace worn parts
- Loose fastening of the steering cardan shaft
Tighten the wedges for fastening the cardan shaft and nuts
- Increased clearance in the gear engagement
Adjust the engagement
- Loose tightening of the nut of the thrust bearings
Adjust the tightening of the nut
- Wear of the ball pair of the steering gear (axial movement of the screw relative to the nut is more than 0.2 mm)
Replace the ball pair
- Wear of the driveshaft splines (angular clearance - more than 2°)
Replace the driveshaft
The power steering does not provide sufficient force or its operation is uneven:
- Insufficient oil level in the pump reservoir
add oil to the required level
- Air in the system (foam in the reservoir, cloudy oil)
Bleed the air.
If air cannot be removed, check the tightness of all connections and the tightness of the suction tubes of the reservoir and pump.
If all of the above is in good condition, change the oil and filter element
Lack of power when turning the steering wheel in various engine operating modes:
- excessive tension in the gear engagement steering gear
Adjust the engagement with the adjusting screw
- Pump malfunction
Check the pump
- Increased oil leakage in the steering gear due to wear or damage to the sealing rings
Disassemble the mechanism, replace the sealing rings
- The relief valve is not adjusted
Adjust the valve by selecting washers
- The pump is faulty
Repair the pump
The car constantly deviates to the side from the specified direction:
- Incorrect installation of the vehicle axles relative to its longitudinal axis
Adjust and check the toe-in and installation angles of the front wheels
- Brake malfunction in one of the front wheels
Check the brakes and fix malfunction
- Violation of the hydraulic balance of the steering gear
Check the installation of the vehicle axles, compare the size of the base on the right and left
The steering jams when turning:
- Jamming of the spool valve or plungers of the steering gear control valve
Disassemble the steering gear, check if the hole in the steering screw is clogged, check the quality of movement of the spool valve and plungers
Disassemble the steering gear and check the smoothness of the spool valve and plungers
- Wear of the connecting parts of the adjusting screw to the pitman shaft
Disassemble the steering gear and eliminate excessive axial play of the adjusting screw
