Adjusting the ZIL-5301 Parking Brake
The ZIL-5301 vehicles and AMO ZIL buses are equipped with a parking brake system driven by a spring energy accumulator (Fig. 1)
Before adjusting the parking brakes, it is necessary to adjust the service brakes (see ZIL-5301 Rear Wheel Brakes).
The drive of the parking brake system with a drive from the energy accumulator is adjusted as follows.
Fully release the parking brakes.
Raise the rear wheels of the car by the rear axle beam with a jack.
Tighten the cables by turning nut 4 of the adjusting rod 3 until the rear wheels are slightly braked.
Then loosen the nut of the adjusting rod until the wheels rotate freely.
When the handle of the parking brake valve is set to the upper fixed position, the wheels should not turn.
Remove the handle from the lock and, having lowered it down to the stop, make sure that the rear wheels rotate freely.
Lower the car onto the wheels.
If new brake pads are installed, they should be ground in.
After adjustment, it is necessary to check the stroke of the spring accumulator rod, which should not exceed 50 mm.
If the stroke of the rod exceeds this value, then the adjustment should be repeated.
It is recommended to carry out the final check on a roller brake test stand by determining the total braking force of the parking brakes.
If everything is done as described here, the parking brake will work without problems.
