In this article, we will look at replacing the angular velocity joints of the front drive VAZ-2121

Preparing the car for repair. We install it on an inspection pit or on a lift.

We remove the drive from the car.

We clean the hinge from the outside and clamp it in a vice with soft pads.

Since the outer hinge is usually changed, we will consider this operation first.

Using pliers or pincers, we squeeze the small clamp by the protrusions and, prying it with a screwdriver, disconnect it.

Remove the large clamp in the same way.

If the protective cover is attached with plastic clamps, then simply cut the clamps with side cutters.

Move the protective plastic and rubber cover along the shaft.

Clean and wipe the end part of the joint from old grease.

Using a soft metal drift or a wooden spacer made of strong wood, knock off the hinge by striking the end of the cage.

Keep in mind that the drift should not transfer force to the separator or balls to avoid damaging them.

This is in case you need to put this hinge back on the shaft.

Remove hinge.

The hinge is held on the shaft by a retaining ring, which is located in a groove at the end of the shaft.

The retaining ring is usually sold complete with the hinge. We pry off the retaining ring with a thin screwdriver

We install the joint in the reverse order.

We clean the shaft and the joint from old grease, apply a thin layer of new SHRUS-4 grease and put the casing and a new cover on the shaft.

We install the new the locking ring.

We put 60 cm 3 of SHRUS-4 grease into the joint cavity.

Using a soft metal punch or a strong wooden spacer, we press the joint onto the shaft.

We put on the rubber boot. Install the clamps.

Before tightening the clamps, release excess air from the rubber boot by prying the boot seat belt with a screwdriver.

Clamp the drive shaft in a vice with soft metal jaw pads.

After removing the clamps, slide the boot along the shaft.

Prying off the retainer (ring) with a screwdriver, remove it.

If you need to install the same joint, you need to mark the relative positions of the housing, separator and cage.

After that, remove the housing of the inner joint.

Using a soft metal punch, knock off the collar.

We wash the housing, separator, cage and balls.

Traces of corrosion, burrs and dents on the tracks are not allowed. If they are found, replace the joint.

We assemble the joint in the reverse order.

When assembling, install a retaining ring and a rubber boot on the shaft.

We put 150 cm 3 of SHRUS-4 grease into the joint.

We install new clamps (before tightening the clamps, release excess air from the boot by prying the seat belt of the boot with a screwdriver).

We install the assembled shaft on the car, as indicated in the article - "Removing and installing the front drive VAZ-2121".
