The steering wheel free play is checked with the engine idling, by rocking the steering wheel back and forth until the steering wheels begin to turn.
The steering wheel free play with the engine idling should not exceed 25°.
On a new car, the steering wheel free play is 15°.
The free play should be checked on the car with the front wheels straight.
If the steering wheel free play is greater than the permissible value, it is necessary to determine which unit is responsible for the increased free play.
To do this, you need to check:
- - with condition and adjustment of control rods;
- - adjustment of the steering mechanism;
- - clearances in the cardan joints of the steering and tightening of the wedges of the cardan shaft fastening.
If the adjustment of the steering mechanism or rods is disturbed, the unit must be repaired.
