The steering gear is removed for repair (we recommend repairing the mechanism in a specialized workshop) or replacement
The steering gear is installed on the left side member from its inner side and is secured to the body side member with three bolts inserted from the inner side.
You will need: keys "17", "19", a screwdriver.
Drain the fluid from the power steering system (see "Replacing the hydraulic fluid of the Niva Chevrolet").
Disconnect the steering rods from the steering gear pitman arm (see "Replacing the steering rods of the Niva Chevrolet").
Unscrew the bolt-nipple of the high-pressure hose.
Pay attention to the condition of the copper gaskets. Replace bent or heavily compressed gaskets
Loosen the clamp of the diverter hose and remove the hose from the steering gear fitting
Mark the position of the intermediate shaft universal joint relative to the steering gear worm shaft, unscrew the tie bolt nut and disconnect the intermediate shaft universal joint from the steering gear worm shaft.
Unscrew the high-pressure hose fitting bolt.
Unscrew the three nuts securing the steering gear to the side member
Please note: flat washers are installed under the nuts. Don't forget to install them when reassembling
Remove the bolts and remove the steering gear.
Replace the steering gear in the reverse order of removal.
Before tightening the nuts of bolts 1 (Fig. 11), use a special device to orient the steering gear so that the angle a = 28° .
After installation, fill the mechanism with fluid and bleed the system (see "Replacing the hydraulic fluid of the Niva Chevrolet").
