Removing and installing the lower arm of the front suspension
Remove the arm for replacement if it has mechanical damage or to replace worn silent blocks (see "Checking the Niva Chevrolet suspension").
You will need: wrenches "13" (two), "17" (two), "22", "24" (two), support (screw or hydraulic jack), punch, hammer.
Remove the front suspension spring from the car (see "How to replace the front suspension spring of the VAZ-2123").
Unscrew the nut of the lower arm axle.
Knock out the axle using a punch and paying attention to the presence and location of the adjusting washers.
Remove the axle, holding the arm.
If necessary, unscrew the nuts of the bolts securing the support cup of the front suspension spring
Before installation, lubricate the axle and bushings in the front suspension crossmember with consistent grease.
Install the removed parts in the reverse order of removal
Tighten the nuts of the arm axle when the suspension is loaded with the weight of the car (on an inspection pit or overpass).
When working on a lift, place a support under the lower arm and slightly lower the car (when working on a site, lift the lower arm with a jack) so that the position of the arms approximately corresponds to their position under load.
After replacing the arm, check and adjust if necessary
Replacing the silent blocks of the lower front suspension arm
Replace the silent blocks if they are worn or damaged (see "Checking the Niva Chevrolet suspension").
You will need: a 22 mm wrench, a special puller for removing and installing silent blocks.
Remove the lower arm assembly with silent blocks from the car
Using a special puller, press the silent blocks out of the lever eyes and press in new ones
After replacing the silent blocks, check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles (see How to check and adjust front wheel alignment angles VAZ-2123.)
Removing and installing the upper arm of the front suspension
Remove the arm for replacement if it has mechanical damage or to replace worn silent blocks.
You will need: keys "13" (two), "22", support (screw or hydraulic jack), a key for wheel nuts.
Remove the wheel.
Place a support under the lower arm, load the suspension (lowering the car or raising the lower arm with a jack) so that the position of the arms approximately corresponds to their position under load.
Unscrew the three nuts of the bolts fastening the ball joint to the upper arm.
Unscrew the two nuts of the bolts securing the axle of the upper arm to the bracket of the cross member of the front suspension.
If the bolts turn, hold them with a wrench.
Remove the arm, paying attention to the number and location of the adjusting washers installed on the axle mounting bolts
Install the new arm complete with silent blocks and axle in the reverse order of removal.
After replacing the arm, check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles
Replacing the silent blocks of the upper arm of the front suspension
Silent blocks replace them if they are worn out or damaged.
You will need: a 22 mm wrench, a special puller for removing and installing silent blocks.
Remove the upper arm assembly with silent blocks and axle from the car.
Unscrew the nuts of the upper arm axle.
Remove the nuts and washers from the axle.
Using a special puller, press the silent blocks out of the lever eyes and press in new silent blocks
After replacing the silent blocks, check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles.
