Symptom - Remedy
The generator does not provide charging current
Malfunction in the circuit generator - relay-regulator - battery or in the ground circuit - Find damage in the wiring or contacts and eliminate it:
Bad contact between the wires and plugs of the connectors - strip the wires;
A break in the connecting wires, a short circuit of insulated wires to ground, a short circuit of the internal strands of wires to a shielded braid, a short circuit of terminals I or Sh to ground - check with a control light for an open or short circuit and eliminate it
No contact between brushes and commutator, dirty, oily or burnt commutator:
- - brush wear exceeds the allowable limit - Change brushes; new brushes must be lapped into the commutator;
- - faulty brush holder spring; the spring does not press the brush against the collector (spring burst, deformed spring) - change the spring;
- - brushes sticking in their guides - clean brush holders and eliminate jamming;
- - oily brushes - clean the brushes with a clean cloth soaked in gasoline;
- - wear of the collector, protrusion of insulation between the plates - grind and clean the collector
Open or short circuit in the armature winding - Disassemble the generator, check the armature on a special device. If there is a short circuit or open circuit, replace the armature
Open or short circuit of the exciter coils - Check the resistance of the coils. If there is an open or short circuit, replace the coil
Short circuit between the collector plates - Clean the interlamellar insulation and, if after that the circuit is still not eliminated, replace the armature
Drive belt slip - Tighten the belt, making sure the ball bearings are working
Faulty relay-regulator - Check the relay-regulator, if necessary, adjust it or send it in for repair
Changing the value of the charging current with a good battery
Dirty, oily or burnt manifold
Poor contact between brushes and commutator - Change brushes; new brushes must be lapped to the commutator;
Manifold wear - grind and clean the manifold
Faulty relay-regulator - Check the relay-regulator, if necessary, adjust it or send it in for repair
Strong sparking of the brush-collector unit:
Check the fastening of the brush cords to the brush holders, tighten if necessary; check the sealing of the brush cords in the brushes; if the contact between the brushes and cords is broken, replace the brush
Poor contact between brushes and commutator
Bearing noise
Excessive tension or misalignment of the drive belt - Eliminate misalignment and adjust the tension of the drive belt
The sound of brushes
Chipped on the brushes. Severe brush wear. Manifold runout - Machine the manifold. Replace brushes
