Removing and installing the steering gear boot
This job requires plastic boot mounting clamps
Disconnect the intermediate steering column shaft from the steering gear (see "Removing and installing the steering column").
To avoid damaging the contact ring on vehicles with an airbag in the steering column, secure the steering shaft from turning.
Disconnect the steering rods from the steering gear (see "Replacing the steering rods").
Using a 13 mm socket wrench with a ratchet, unscrew the two nuts of the right steering gear bracket and remove the bracket
Similarly, remove the left steering gear bracket
Cut the clamp with side cutters or a knife
Removing the protective cap from the steering gear
Removing the right support
Using side cutters, cut through the two plastic clamps securing the protective cover of the steering gear on the right 1 and left 2 sides of the steering gear
Removing the protective boot from the steering gear housing
Installation
- 1. Put FIOL-1 grease into the inner cavity of the steering gear housing.
- 2. Put the protective boot on the steering gear housing. Fix it with new clamps.
- 3. Put the right support and protective cap on the steering gear. Fix the steering gear cap with a new clamp.
- 4. We attach it to the steering gear with brackets. We tighten the bracket nuts with a torque of 15-18.6 Nm (1.5-1.9 kgf-m)
- 5. We attach the rods to the steering gear.
- 6. We attach the intermediate shaft of the steering column to the shaft of the steering gear (see "Steering column - removal and installation").
Removing and installing the steering gear
In the passenger compartment, unscrew the nut of the bolt securing the lower universal joint to the shaft-pinion of the steering gear.
In the engine compartment, use a 10 head to unscrew the nut of the upper mount of the steering gear casing.
From underneath the car, use a 10 mm head to unscrew the two nuts on the lower mount of the steering gear casing.
Removing the steering gear casing mechanism.
We hang up the front part of the car and remove the front wheels.
The steering mechanism can be removed without the steering rods or with the rods.
In the first case, we disconnect the steering rods from the steering mechanism.
Using a 13 mm head, unscrew two nuts fastening the steering gear brackets to the front shield on both sides.
Move the steering gear forward to remove the pinion shaft from the hole in the front shield
Remove the steering gear, bringing it out through the window in the left wheel arch
When dismantling the steering gear assembly with rods, disconnect the steering rod ends from the shock absorber strut pivot arms.
Remove the steering gear with rods
Install the steering gear in the reverse order.
Before installation, check that the rack is set to the middle position.
To do this, use sliding pliers We rotate the shaft by the chamfer on the gear shaft in any direction until it stops, after which we turn the shaft in the opposite direction by two full turns and turn the shaft further so that the chamfer on the shaft is located vertically on the right side in the direction of the vehicle.
