We remove the unit to replace the failed damper drive rods and backlight bulbs
We disconnect the negative battery terminal.
We remove the air temperature control knob by pulling it.
We also remove the air flow distribution control knob and the fan mode switch.
Pry off the plastic handle with a screwdriver
Removing the air recirculation control lever handle
Pry off the unit trim with a screwdriver
Remove the trim and unscrew the two screws securing the unit with a Phillips screwdriver
We remove the unit from the instrument panel and disconnect the wiring block from the fan mode switch
We disconnect the wiring block from the unit backlight lamp socket
Use a screwdriver to pry off the bracket securing the recirculation flap drive rod casing.
Use a screwdriver to pry off the rod from the drive lever recirculation
Disconnect the recirculation flap drive rod.
Also disconnect the rods from the temperature regulator and air flow distribution.
To replace the backlight lamp, use pliers to turn the lamp holder counterclockwise and remove the holder with the lamp from the unit
Remove the lamp from the holder
Install the lamp and unit in the reverse order.
