The wheel drive consists of two constant velocity joints (CV joints) connected to each other by a shaft

Shafts are not interchangeable.

The left one is made of a steel rod and is shorter than the right one, made of a pipe.

The connection between the shaft and the hinges is splined; against longitudinal movement, the shaft is secured in the hinges with thrust and locking rings.

The splined shank of the outer joint housing is connected to the hub and secured with a bearing nut, and the inner one is connected to the drive gear in the differential box and secured with a retaining ring.

Front wheel drive: 1 - retaining ring of the inner joint housing; 2 - internal hinge body; 3 - protective ring of the internal hinge housing; 4 - shaft stop; 5 - retaining ring; 6 - clip; 7 - ball; 8 - thrust ring; 9 - separator; 10 - large clamp; 11 - internal hinge retainer; 12 - protective cover; 13 - small clamp; 14 - valve ring; 15 - valve casing; 16 - shaft; 17 - protective ring of the outer hinge housing; 18 - outer hinge housing

The hinge consists of a body, a separator, a cage and six balls, which are placed in the grooves of the body and cage.

In the outer hinge, these grooves are made along a radius, which ensures its rotation angle of up to 42°.

In the internal joint housing, the grooves are straight, which allows the parts to move in the longitudinal direction, lengthening or shortening the drive (this is necessary to compensate for the mutual movements of the suspension and power unit).

Hinge parts are manufactured with high precision.

The balls in each joint are installed in one sorting group.

A worn-out hinge is replaced only as an assembly.

Before assembly, add 40 g to the outer joint and 80 g of CV joint grease to the inner joint

The tightness of the hinge - an indispensable condition for its reliable operation - is ensured by protective rubber covers.

The hinge cover is placed on the hinge body and drive shaft and secured with clamps.

It is allowed to use only special clamps with a smooth inner surface and without protruding parts.

The covers are attached to the drive shaft through rubber-metal valves.

The valve prevents an increase or decrease in pressure inside the cover, leading to its rupture and depressurization of the hinge.

Possible malfunctions, their causes and methods of elimination

- Cause of malfunction

Elimination method

Noise, knocking from the front wheel when the car is moving:

- Wear of hinge parts

Replace worn or damaged hinges

- Deformation of wheel drive shafts

Replace the shafts, article - "Replacing wheel drive parts"

Grease leak:

- Damage or rupture of the protective cover of the inner or outer hinge

Replace the grease in the joint and the protective cover
